SEBASTOPOL DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL selects "James Castle: Portrait of an Artist"

Sunday, March 8 at 1pm

James Castle: Portrait of an Artist

Director: Jeffrey Wolf
USA, 2008, 53 minutes
James Castle was born deaf in 1899 in Idaho. He refused to learn to read, write, or sign, but was obsessed from an early age with artmaking. The film reveals the artist’s life and creative process. A case of triumph of the spirit, Castle’s story is one of monumental achievement.

Film preceded by

Silly & Serious: William Robinson and Self Portraits

Director: Dennis Tupicoff
Australia, 2008, 25 minutes
One of Australia's leading landscape artists, William Robinson has twice won the Archibald Prize for his self portraits. Shot in Paris, Brisbane and Melbourne, Silly & Serious presents Robinson at work, playing Debussy, and discussing his work; his love for old Laurel and Hardy movies; and how humor and sadness can exist in the same portrait.
